Hi folks--Check out the Oryx and Crake-inspired art on Ms. Schwartz's blog (http://englishschwartz.blogspot.com). Please write a well organized paragraph that evaluates the imaginative and emotional validity of these representations (i.e., do they evoke something powerful? do they convey the emotions of story? do they offer thought-provoking interpretations?).

All of these art pieces give off different energies, and different emotions. The picture of Oryx shows when Jimmy first recognized her. The fact that her face isn’t fully shown, shows her struggles and her secrets. It represents her mysteriousness and her unknown past. Yet she’s smiling, meaning after all she’s been through you can still see that she’s gentle and content with whom she is. The picture with the CorpsSeCorps is quite unnerving. Usually people who try to protect citizens, try to look friendly and inviting, yet these men have their eyes covered (meaning they might not be looking out for citizens as much as they are looking for people with other types of thinking such as Jimmy’s mom). The picture with Crake completely blew me out of the ball park. His eyes are extremely demonic, and I do not see how Jimmy trusts this person. This picture also shows a bit of Jimmy’s past displayed in the present as well (the porn in the background). The picture with the pigoons displays these creations that have human DNA in them. These genetically modified pigs actually tend to look like human beings; their eyebrows, their ears, tongues and lips. I found these to be extremely disturbing that people would sink that low and make pigs look like us. This is even shown in one of the workers face; a very disturbed look. For the last picture of Jimmy, you sort of see him at a point of complete loneliness and isolation. It has obviously been a while since the destruction of civilization, and you can see his bones from starvation. As well as the cities are flooded with water and plants are growing all over the buildings. This picture shows his struggles with living.
ReplyDeleteI think that each of the pictures conveys very accurate and intense emotions that come right out of the novel. Each subject is very different, and the colour and style of the artworks shows an interesting take on the events and characters in Oryx and Crake. The pictures that I feel give off the most emotion are the first and last. The first picture is clearly of Oyrx while she's handing out the BlyssPluss pills. This piece of art shows her seductive side, and it really draws the viewer in. She also gives off a mysterious vibe, as her face is partially covered. This does embody Oryx's character, as she is a very mysterious and oddly seductive character. The last picture is of Snowman as he looks over the remains of human civilization. The photo shows a very desolate and empty land as the setting, and is probably an image from the opening pages of the novel. Snowman himself looks very pensive and lonely as he sits in his tree, surveying the damage caused by Crake's apocalypse. These images, along with the other three, show the deep emotions that run within Oryx and Crake.
ReplyDeleteThe wonderful thing about reading a novel is that as you read, you are freely able to visualize and paint a picture in your imagination to create your interpretation of what the author is describing in his novel. Apart from the cover and perhaps a few other images, the reader cannot know exactly what the author is envisioning and so the freedom is there for your imagination to picture based on the story told. Each individual’s imagination will visualize a slightly different interpretation of the novel as we all have unique minds. That being said, I think that the depictions of the dystopian world of Oryx and Crake are valid representations of the text. Although these representations of Oryx and Crake may not be the way other people including myself have envisioned certain people, places, events or things to be, it is the artist’s interpretation. Personally, I think that these photographs accurately convey the emotions of the story and offer a thought provoking interpretation of the novel. For example, the artist’s imagined pigoon animal perfectly corresponds to the picture that I drew in my head. In conclusion, it is impossible for all of us to picture Atwood’s scenes and characters in the same manner and since the artist’s pictures are parallel to Atwood’s text, I believe they are emotionally and imaginatively valid representations.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures found on Ms. Schwartz’s blog carry a very strong emotional message. The reader can easily relate to each one of the pictures. The first picture is very darker towards the left and getting brighter towards the right. I believe this is a reflection of Oryx’s life. He beginning was dark; filled with abuse and exploitation and her life as she matured was turned out to be brighter, when she was next introduced in the paradice compound. He face is left dark because we don’t really get to learn much about her personality. The Corp Se Corp picture which appears next is very basic. I believe this is because they didn’t have a major role in the novel. They were shown as spies who were always trying to get information and the picture depicts them with binoculars, which in this picture symbolizes spying. The next picture is quiet disturbing. Out of all the pictures in the blog, this one evokes the most emotions of sorrow and disgust. The picture clearly shows, a screen with child pornography in the background with a man in the front doing an inappropriate gesture. It portrays Crake and Jimmy’s youth when they use to indulge themselves in watching child pornography and the man symbolizes that didn’t really care of how bad what they were watching actually was. The picture with the Pigoons is one that holds many absurd qualities. The pigoons seem to more humanistic and larger than portrayed in the novel. I feel it is a reflection of the ending of the novel. It shows how artificial enhancement will have a negative impact on society. The picture has a very negative vibe. And the last picture seems to be very peaceful and calming. It is a depiction of snowman and his life. The birds flying show that snowman is actually free in comparison to the crakers who are the only other human life forms left. Snowman has more mental freedom in comparison to them. The picture shows that even though snow man is deprived of a luxurious life his mind is at peace.
